Three years and three months later, a massive oil spill in North Dakota still isn’t fully cleaned up. The company responsible hasn’t even set a date for completion.

Though crews have been working around the clock to deal with the Tesoro Corp. pipeline break, which happened in a wheat field in September 2013, less than a third of the 840,000 gallons that spilled has been recovered — or ever will be, North Dakota Health Department environmental scientist Bill Suess said.

A farmer, Steve Jenkins, who’d smelled the crude oil for days, discovered the spill in his northwestern North Dakota field near Tioga — his combines’ tires were covered in it.

While the nearest home was a half-mile away and the state said no water sources were contaminated and no wildlife hurt, one of the largest onshore oil spills recorded in the U.S. serves for some as a cautionary example, especially given a recent pipeline break about 150 miles south and ongoing debates over the four-state Dakota Access pipeline.

“What happened to us happened and we can’t go back,” said Patty Jensen, Steve’s wife. This month’s pipeline break in Belfield, which belched an estimated 176,000 gallons of oil into a creek that feeds into the Little Missouri River, a tributary of the Missouri River, really rankled her.

“But I get really upset when I hear of a new one and I wonder what is being done to prevent these spills,” she said.

As ominous news about police at standing rock using live ammo begins circulating, thousands of selfless veterans have taken a stand.

A steady stream of U.S. military veterans continued to pour into the Standing Rock protest camps over the weekend, with our sources on the ground estimating nearly 5,000 vets already there, and more arriving throughout the night to take part in the “Veterans Stand for Standing Rock” movement.

The newly arrived veterans wasted no time in making their presence felt as a contingent of vets and water protectors made their way to the bridge, a strategic point that controls access between the encampments and the construction area. The bridge was the scene of an earlier confrontation that saw militarized police assault viciously attack the non-violent protestors with less-than-lethal weapons.

Wes Clark Jr., a key organizer of the “Veterans for Standing Rock,” met with various law enforcement representatives, including the Cass Country Sheriff, an Army general, a veterans representative spokesperson, and a rep for the TigerSwan private security firm coordinating intelligence for law enforcement on the police held side of the bridge.

While Clark met with law enforcement, his fellow vets that accompanied him to the bridge formed a human shield to hold space and stand between the police and the water protectors.

There are now unconfirmed reports within the camps that the use of live ammunition has been approved by law enforcement on anyone attempting to retake the bridge. Many on the ground believe that the National Guard may be called in, creating a potentially drastic escalation of an already tenuous situation.

The video below reveals Sheriff Kirchmeier attempting to lay the groundwork for an escalation of police violence by spouting ridiculous assertions regarding vets and PTSD. Be aware that his diatribe almost certainly marks the beginning phase of an escalation of police-sponsored violence — which will ultimately be blamed on water protectors and veterans.

The veterans have brought supplies such as gas masks, earplugs and body armor in an effort to form a protective line around protestors as a means of protecting them against rubber bullets and bean bag rounds – which are actually filled with lead pellets, not beans. One water protector, SiouxZ, has already gone blind in one eye after being shot in the face with these munitions.

“Our goal is to stand there and if need be take the rounds for the First Nations people so they can do their thing,” Mark Sanderson, a former Army Sergeant who served in Iraq, told Vice News.

“We’re here to assist in any way possible,” Sanderson said. “The police are trying to say it’s not a peaceful protest because we’re in body armor. But I mean, this doesn’t look aggressive at all. There are no magazine pouches, there’s nothing that can be construed as having a weapon. We’re just padding ourselves against any force they might use.”

In fact, the veterans are taking a page out of international protest movements by bringing mirrors to Standing Rock in an effort to make law enforcement officers look at what they have become – nothing more than a militarized security force for billion dollar energy corporations.

“The veterans are saying we can’t stand for that,” filmmaker Josh Fox, who has documented the police force at Standing Rock, told RT.

“What you do to the water protectors you do to the United States Constitution. We are sworn to uphold and protect the United States Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And they’re saying listen, if you wanna burn the United States Constitution, you have to go through us. It’s quite a brave and amazing act that’s never happened in the history of the United States, that two thousand veterans just said you know what? Shoot at us first.”

 The Army Corps of Engineers, last week, issued an evacuation order for all protest camps North of the Missouri River by Dec 4th – which includes the Oceti Sakowin camp – a demand that has been rejected wholesale by tribal leaders. Then, on Monday, North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple ordered a mandatory evacuation of the area, citing health concerns.

“I appreciate the governor’s concern about our safety,” said Oceti Sakowin media organizer John Bigelow. “I wish he had been concerned about our safety when he was spraying us with water cannons in 23-degree weather.”

The collusion between the feds and Dalrymple, to laughably use “health concerns” as a means of forcing the closure of the camps, means that anyone who refuses to leave by December 5 risks being arrested or fined on a state and/or federal level. The state has denied it has plans for the “forcible removal” of protesters, but given the ongoing brutality, and disparate force, evidenced by law enforcement — the state’s denial is of extremely little value.

In addition, as we previously reported, the Morton County sheriff’s department has threatened anyone bringing supplies to Standing Rock with a $1,000 fine. As if brutalizing and beating non-violent protestors wasn’t enough, Kirchmeier’s goons now look to create a human rights crisis in the below freezing condition.

For many of the veterans, including Sanderson, an Iraqi war vet, the battle over DAPL isn’t a simple environmental issue, as he believes that he is standing on the right side of history.

“In my prior deployment, I really feel like I was being utilized in the same way the troops are being utilized here,” Sanderson told Vice. “To protect American interests, whether fossil fuel, natural gas, pipeline. It’s all the same, and it’s the wrong way forward.”

While there is no guarantee against state-sponsored violence at the hands of law enforcement, the arrival of these selfless veterans may decrease the likelihood of the continuation of appalling violence that’s been displayed by law enforcement over the past few months at Standing Rock.

*Update – In a complete reversal of the expected, early reports say the Army Corps of Engineers has now denied the easement which would allow Energy Transfer Partners to drill and route the Dakota Access Pipeline under the Missouri River.

A press release from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says “the Department of the Army will not approve an easement that will allow the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe.”

According to the U.S. Army in a statement to its website:

“The Department of the Army will not approve an easement that would allow the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota, the Army’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Works announced today,” the Army’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Works, Jo-Ellen Darcy, stated.

“Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, it’s clear that there’s more work to do.The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.”

And he also asks what if it was a pipeline that was filled with free food for people who actually need food, as opposed to oil?

“The point is these police are attacking these water protectors specifically because the Dakota Access Pipeline will make billions upon billions of dollars for the corporate totalitarian state. Profit in our current model is more important than clean water, more important than air, more important than your family not having cancer, more important than your sacred ground, more important than your land rights, more important than a sustainable future.”

Lee notes that profit for the corporation rules over all of that, which is why we should all stand for Standing Rock.

It’s a revolting brutality that even police officers are actually backing out of. And these authorities ought to be encouraged for taking a stand, and going against what they’ve been told to do is right.

Cannon Ball, ND — The much-anticipated arrival of veterans to Standing Rock has begun and it’s happening several days ahead of schedule. According to sources in Standing Rock, veterans began arriving last night and have already confronted police on scene.

As the Free Thought Project has reported, over 2,000 members of Veterans Stand for Standing Rock have planned to travel to the campsite near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to create a human barrier between protesters and law enforcement this weekend. However, it appears they are a little earlier than expected.

The veterans are hoping their presence will ease some of the pressure of the water protectors who’ve endured relentless punishment from the heavily militarized police present at the scene.

The sheer volume of anecdotal, video, and photographic evidence cataloguing abusive, barbarous, savage, dangerous, brutal, debasing treatment of hundreds of water protectors evinces an ignominious compendium of human rights abuse by law enforcement acting in defense of a private corporation — rather than in the interest of public safety — and the veterans are bravely standing up to stop it.

However, their presence at Standing Rock, in spite of their good intentions, is being met with backlash from other veteran groups.

“We agree that it is our constitutional right to assemble and to peacefully protest,” North Dakota Veterans Coordinating Council President Russ Stabler told reporters at the West Fargo VFW Post 7564 building, according to Reuters. “However, protests over the last 100-plus days in North Dakota have been less than peaceful.

“Participating in this kind of assembly even as a peaceful bystander or participant will only mar the image of the North Dakota veterans and the veterans of our nation,” he added.

But he is wrong. Veterans for Standing Rock has received stunning support from across the country, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in just a few days.

While there are certainly a handful of agitators in the mix, the overwhelming majority of protesters at Standing Rock have proven to be nonviolent and entirely peaceful. There is no shortage of video evidence to make this case.

Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers issued an eviction notice for protesters to vacate all Corps property. However, days later, they came out with a vague statement saying they would not enforce this eviction. But they did promise to fine people for staying, which would almost inevitably lead to the use of force.

According to Reuters, North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple said state officials never contemplated forcibly removing protesters and his evacuation order was mainly due to concerns about inclement weather endangering people. Frigid weather makes some aspects of pipeline construction more difficult, engineers interviewed by Reuters said.

Alluding to the gross treaty violations by the United States against the Standing Rock Sioux, the tribe lashed out with a well-deserved jab at officials’ concerns for the cold weather, noting — “the Governor of North Dakota and Sheriff of Morton County are relative newcomers” to the land, “it is understandable they would be concerned about severe winter weather.”

The tribe explained that they have adequate shelter and added that the Great Sioux Nation has survived “in this region for millennia without the concerns of state or county governments.”

 

The eviction order is set for December 5 and Veterans for Standing Rock were set to arrive on December 4th, leaving many folks concerned about the potential for a massive showdown. Now, as they are showing up early, we see the veterans are ready and willing to take that stand.

In fact, reports are already surfacing of veterans standing up against police at the now infamous Backwater bridge site.

While all veterans may not agree with the actions at Standing Rock, it is important to note that the Sioux have the moral high ground. While this issue certainly involves the safety of their water supply, it is also a matter of full on theft of property as the land in which this pipeline will run is Sioux territory that has been stolen by the Army Corps of Engineers, in a twisted history of treaty violations.

‘I bled in Iraq and you’re going to threaten to shoot me on a bridge in North Dakota?’

American veteran Matthew Crane has been to Iraq and Kuwait, and has led disaster relief teams in the U.S. Now he says he’s found a new mission at the Oceti Sakowin Camp in North Dakota, supporting those opposing the Dakota Access pipeline.

The 32-year-old navy veteran is one of a growing number of ex-military members heading to the centre of the pipeline fight as part of a group called Veterans Stand for Standing Rock.

Last week the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the Oceti Sakowin Camp land, told people who had gathered on the land they had to leave by Dec. 5. 

But state officials have since said they won’t enforce the order and more people are arriving, despite frigid temperatures, snow and mounting uncertainty about what will happen at the site.

For his part, Crane says he is willing to be a human shield between local law enforcement — which he describes as a “domestic enemy” — and those who have congregated at the site to oppose the pipeline.

“They’re not protesting, they’re praying,” he said. “We’re going to act as a barrier.”

The 1,885-kilometre pipeline project, owned by Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners LP, is mostly complete, except for a segment planned to run under Lake Oahe, a reservoir formed by a dam on the Missouri River.

‘This is what I need to be doing’

Veterans here say there are a number of reasons drawing them in, including standing up for Indigenous people, environmentalism and even seeing an opportunity to put specialized survival skills to use.

Brandee Paisano, for one, chokes up when she describes why she is here. She’s an Indigenous U.S. navy veteran from the Laguna Pueblo tribe in New Mexico, who was raised by a single father who did two tours in Vietnam.

“I signed up to serve my country and my people and I did that overseas,” she said. “I didn’t think I’d have to do it here, on this land, so here I am. This is what I need to be doing.”

Those who oppose the pipeline say it could threaten drinking water and harm sacred sites. Others say it is a safer way to move crude oil from North Dakota to Illinois.

Mark Sanderson, a former special forces soldier from Texas, sees the task here as being similar to a peacekeeping mission but on home soil.

He’s hoping to make law enforcement question some of their tactics in dealing with the protesters.

N.D. veterans urged to stay home 

Still, support is not universal among veterans.

The North Dakota Veterans Co-ordinating Council, which unites a number of veterans’ organizations in the state, said Thursday veterans should stay home, as they plan to do.

“If they come, they will be respectful,” warned Russ Stabler. “If not, we want it understood, these are not North Dakota veterans and they do not represent the veterans of North Dakota. And we are encouraging all of our people not to go out there.”

Yesterday, Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier told CBC News the veterans’ movement does not make sense.

“That’s not going to prove anything and it’s not going to fix anything, he said.

Kirchmeier also expressed concern that veterans could bring with them an element of violence.

“The moment we commit violence, the moment we throw rocks, the moment we throw bottles, the moment we throw anything, we lose our mission, we’ve lost,” said Sanderson, the former special forces soldier from Texas.

Paisano said she believed perhaps the veterans could even potentially be a mechanism for people here to find common ground with law enforcement.

“We probably served together, you know?”

The state governor cited weather concerns as a reason for the eviction notice.
