While America has been busy grappling with the coronavirus pandemic, its drug abuse epidemic has surged in the background.
Drug overdoses shot up by 29.5% in the year to March 2021, rising to 96,770 from 74,679 the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Drug deaths spiked most drastically in the state of Vermont – by a shocking 85.1%. Only three states recorded drops in overdoses: South Dakota, New Hampshire, and New Jersey.
The coronavirus crisis created the perfect breeding ground for addiction, with job losses and personal losses causing many to self-medicate. This was compounded by support programs and centers for addicts being canceled and closed.
