  1. While reading through the article I kept seeing the death of the Hope river that runs here, behind the house. Each summer the algae blooms increase with less fish and more of what remains in the toxic waters turning up dead on the surface. Cormorants no longer come up the river; the turtles are gone – I could make a long list of negative changes, but what’s the point? It’s in your face, unless you live a commuter mole lifestyle between the air-conditioned pick-up truck, the air-conditioned office, the centrally heated and air-conditioned house and hardly ever seeing the natural world. So how can someone not intimately connected to nature notice its changes, or make a connection between those changes (mostly negative) and man’s “footprint?”
